My teaching philosophy….I love to be a part of the learning process. Although learning can be exciting, it can also be difficult to sit in that place of " not knowing." My approach is to compassionately guide you through that difficult place. Each of us learns in a different way and I endeavor to reach each student in that place. My intention is to cultivate that unique gift that YOU bring to healing work. RC

SOFT UNDERBELLY SERIES
A Continuing Education Opportunity

The Soft Underbelly Series is a series of classes designed to strengthen your confidence and skills working in the vulnerable areas of the body. These classes can be taken in any order or individually. Prerequisite: A minimum of 300 hours of massage or manual therapy training

Class I: The Psoas, Class II: The Diaphragm, Class III: The Anterior Neck

Class I: The Psoas
Deep in the core of the body, often a source of low back, hip and pelvic pain, the psoas muscle is important to core stability, but also to the ease and freedom of the body. Yet many practitioners are not comfortable working on this deep structure.

  • Gain skill and confidence working on deeper muscle layers.
  • Learn and practice several techniques for releasing psoas and iliacus muscles.
  • Learn anatomy, palpation, draping and communication skills.

Class II: The Diaphragm
The diaphragm, our primary respiration muscle is often restricted due to stress, postural habits, injuries and less than optimal breathing patterns. When not functioning properly, it can cause rib and back pain as well as neck and pelvic pain.

  • Gain skill and confidence working on the diaphragm
  • Learn and practice several techniques, both direct and indirect for releasing the diaphragm muscle.
  • Learn how to coach your client into a new and more efficient breathing pattern.
  • Learn anatomy, palpation, draping and communication skills.

Class III: The Anterior Neck The anterior neck is a vulnerable and sometimes scary place to address. We are often taught in massage school not to touch this area. Yet, it is a important area to release especially after a whiplash injury. It is sometimes the key to turning around someone’s pain pattern.

  • Gain skill and confidence working on the muscles and fascia of the anterior neck.
  • Learn and practice myofascial techniques for releasing the scalenes, SCM and hyoid muscles and cervical fascia.
  • Learn anatomy, palpation, draping and communication skills.

CRANIOSACRAL BASICS

Craniosacral Therapy is a holistic healing practice combining sensitive hands – on bodywork with the meditative use of the inner eye and inner ear. It is through light touch that the practitioner is able to feel subtle patterns of motion within the body – rhythms, pulls, pulsations – emanating from deep within the core structures of the body. By gently facilitating the subtle unwinding of these deep structures within the body, the Craniosacral therapist can enable the release of Craniosacral restrictions. Release at these profound regulatory levels in turn enables the release of disease conditions throughout the body.

In this one-day class, you will:

  • learn what Craniosacral Therapy is. (I will present a simplified version of the anatomy and physiology of the craniosacral system)
  • discover how to recognize the rhythm of the craniosacral system
  • learn basic craniosacral techniques to relieve pain and promote relaxation
  • receive hands-on instruction in craniosacral techniques that you can use on your family, friends or patients
  • experience your innate ability to provide healing energy to others and yourself

This class is open to anyone who is interested in learning the fundamentals of Craniosacral Therapy.

Cranial 1 (C1): The Foundation Class

This four-day class is designed to introduce analytical and intuitive visionary understanding of craniosacral work, perhaps more appropriately described as Sacred Cranial, since it approaches the head with such reverence. It is the High Art of healing touch. This exquisitely sensitive, subtle and careful work can be highly effective when properly applied; the gentlest of approaches is often more powerful than the most robust. As e.e. cummings said, "nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands."

The class emphasizes perceptual clarity, inner calm and right action, which form the context for our study of cranial anatomy and technique. Each half-day of the class is devoted to the study of a specific cranial bone, using natural disarticulated specimens, slides and hands-on work with a partner to deepen understanding. All practical work is under the constant supervision of the teacher and his or her assistants. The techniques presented for each bone are brought together in a basic technique protocol that health care practitioners may use as a basis with which to introduce cranial work to their own practices.

Prerequisite: 500 hour massage training, professional training in bodywork or a medical field, or an equivalent training in another form of sensitive touch.

Where: Classes offered in Arcata, CA, Portland, OR, Bend, OR, Austin, TX and Vancouver, Canada

Tuition: $600 USD

Cranial 2 (C2) Coupled Holds, Sacral Work and Unwinding

This class is designed to broaden scope and deepen capabilities in Visionary Craniosacral Work, building upon the foundation of the introductory class. Cranial 2 is structured to show new ways to harness perception and insight to tactile and communicative skills, and to show new ways to interact with the conscious medium that is the body.

The class devotes 2 days to studying supine approaches to the sacral and coxal bones and muscles of the pelvis. The third day is focused on the lateral bony structures of the cranium and introduces coupled and spanning contacts with both the head and the face. The last day is dedicated to understanding the concept, sensitivity to, and practice of unwinding, and process.

Where: Classes offered in Arcata, CA, Portland, OR, Bend, OR, Austin, TX and Vancouver, Canada

Tuition: $600 USD

Cranial 3 (C3), Shaman's Skills: Sculpting the Conscious Medium

The "Shaman's Skills" are a combination of visionary, poetic, tactile and ceremonial ingredients that make up Visionary Craniosacral Work. Cranial 3 begins by interlacing meridian work and cranial work with a "Windows to the Sky" protocol.

Windows To The Sky (WTTS) points are a series of acupressure or acupuncture points located on the upper arms, shoulders, chest, neck and cranial base that have been used since antiquity to help facilitate insight, flight to other realms, and the transition from sunlight to oceanic consciousness. They may also be used to help ease pain and discomfort. The use of WTTS points helps to refine touch, understand the energy body, and deepen intention.

Governor and Earth (GE) is a name for a short sequence of techniques that involve deeper pressures to help open ‘bottlenecks’ in the body, places where the craniosacral wave is not flowing freely. GE techniques are introduced in this class to help the student practitioner respond to characterological armoring, restricted-movement body defenses, and  to help the return of chi and shen to the dreambody. This includes working with hara, ming men, inferior gluteal fold, vertebra, and the posterior suboccipital muscles. At this level GE work interfaces in an elegant way with the WTTS work that begins this class.

Tuition: $600 USD

Cranial 4 (C4), Developing the Inner Eye

This class is devoted to developing the essential craniosacral skills of focus and perception. The inner-eye and inner-ear are harnessed to sensitive hands-on work with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), muscle contraction, migraine and cluster headaches. The first day begins with the study of psychometry in diagnosis, perception and visualization. On the second day students will study brain anatomy and physiology as related to headache and TMD. Temporomandibular joint approaches are investigated in detail. Students will then be taught to combine the intuitive reading of a model's being with an assessment of the position, motility and energetic loading of their cranial architecture. The accuracy of their perception will then be assessed by following a cranial protocol with their model.

On the third and fourth days, students learn the meaning and "weight" of postures and gestures and how to apply intuitive diagnostic information to the invaluable rituals of shamanistic naming and use of totems. This combination of the perceptive, tactile and the experiential is what makes Visionary Craniosacral Work "The High Art."

Tuition: $600 USD

EXPLORING THE RIBCAGE
Movement and Breath

Do you or your clients complain of chronic back pain?
Is their breath shallow or held?
Do they have “head forward posture”?

This class explores the significance of the ribcage in contributing to restricted movement and breath which can lead to poor posture, chronic pain and decreased vitality.

In this class you will:

  • learn the anatomy of the thorax
  • learn the physiological movement of the ribcage in breathing and movement
  • learn the muscles involved in breathing and how to release them
  • learn mobilization techniques to release restrictions in the ribcage
  • Learn exploratory movement “lessons” to help you and your clients develop awareness and help release restrictions in the ribcage and thoracic spine

Prerequisite: 250 hour massage training, professional training in bodywork or a medical field, or an equivalent training in another form of sensitive touch.

RELEASING THE PSOAS MUSCLE

A deep core muscle, Psoas, problems can affect the lumbar spine, hips, pelvis, the diaphragm, and abdominal organs. In this class you will learn the about the anatomy and function and energetics of the Iliopsoas muscle. You will also learn and practice a variety of techniques to release this powerful muscle..

EXPLORING THE MIDLINE

Midline, the central channel, Sushumna, is the main channel of cerebrospinal fluid and energy inside the spinal column. When life energy flows through this median pathway there is a relative balance of our body/mind. We experience inner peace, harmony, lucidity. When we are stressed or out of balance physically, emotionally or spiritually, we tend to be “off center” or “out of our midline”.

In this class, we will:

  • explore the structures making up the vertical column
  • learn and practice Craniosacral techniques to encourage and realign midline flow
  • practice exercises to help the Craniosacral practitioner sense deeper into the midline stillness and flow

Prerequisite: A minimum of 24 classroom hours of Craniosacral therapy is required.
